Still Relying on Traditional IT Staffing Models?

It’s time to rethink your approach.

In 2025, a major shift is reshaping the IT staffing industry. More firms are moving beyond staff augmentation and embracing IT solutions and it’s happening fast.

According to SIA’s Staffing Trends 2025 report, the rise of outsourced services is one of the most significant trends this year, especially in IT.

From Staffing to Solutions

What’s changed? Since 2022, the push toward higher-value services has accelerated. As of April 2025, 12% of staffing industry M&A deals involve the acquisition of IT solutions firms, double the rate from previous years.

Why the Shift?

Temporary IT staffing is under pressure, and clients are asking for more than just headcount, they want results. Project-based and SOW (statement of work) models are no longer niche alternatives. They’re quickly becoming the preferred way to engage.

In fact, 76% of companies now include SOW contracts in their contingent programs. Another 20% are expected to adopt this model by 2027.

The Problems and the Solutions

The Problems:

  • Clients expect results, not just resources: The traditional staff augmentation model no longer meets the demand for accountability and measurable impact.

  • Economic volatility is exposing weaknesses: Hourly-based staffing is highly sensitive to budget cuts and shifting priorities.

  • Short-term engagements limit growth: Transactional relationships make it hard to build long-term value or differentiate in the market.

The Solutions:

  • Adopt outcome-based delivery models: Shifting to project-based or SOW models aligns services with business results, not just hours worked.

  • Build strategic, long-term partnerships: Solution-oriented engagements foster deeper collaboration and client loyalty.

  • Diversify revenue through higher-value work: Solutions offer stronger margins and reduce dependency on volume-based staffing.

Transitioning requires investment, new skills, new structures, and a new mindset.

SIA’s Introduction to IT Services and Solutions for IT Staffing Firms 2025 outlines the steps firms need to take to make this shift, from strategic design to operational execution.

Bottom line: The problems facing traditional staffing are real, but so are the opportunities. Firms that evolve now won’t just survive the shift, they’ll lead it.
